Replacement Windows FAQs

How do you measure for replacement windows?

When replacing a window, proper measurements are crucial, and even minor errors can compromise how well your new window fits. This is why we strongly recommend having a professional take measurements for your window. However, if you’re still interested in taking your own window measurements, you’ll want to measure:

  1. Horizontal width: Take three measurements: top, middle, and bottom. After taking these measurements, you’ll want to use the smallest of the three numbers.
  2. Vertical height: Again, take three measurements: left, middle, and right, and use the smallest number as your final measurement.
  3. Depth: Be sure to take this measurement on all sides of your window.

How much will it cost to replace windows?

Window replacement costs can vary based on a variety of factors, such as window size, style, and more. At Window World, we have options available for all budgets. To find out how much your project will cost, contact us today for a free estimate, and check out our latest promotions.

How do you measure windows for blinds?

The process of measuring your window for blinds differs depending on whether you have inside mount blinds or outside mount blinds. Follow the steps below with consideration for the type of blinds you plan to install:

Inside mount blinds:

  1. Measure your window frame’s depth.
  2. Measure your window’s width in three places: top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest of these numbers as your final measurement.
  3. Measure the height of your window in three places: left, right, and center. Depending on the type of blinds or shade you are installing, you will either use the smallest or the largest of these measurements.
  4. Do not deduct anything from your width or height measurements, as manufacturers will already account for allowances and deductions.

Outside mount blinds:

  1. Measure the width you would like your blinds to cover, including at least 1 ½” on both sides for optimal coverage.
  2. Measure height, starting from the point your blinds will be hung, down to the window sill. Be sure to leave 1 ½” – 2” of overlap on top to account for your blinds’ mounting hardware.
  3. Again, do not deduct anything from your measurements, as this will be accounted for by manufacturers.

How do you clean windows?

The difference between a clean window and a dirty window is night and day. To keep your windows pristine and gleaming, follow these simple steps:

  1. Use a vacuum to clean larger dust and debris.
  2. Use a soft cloth with soapy water to clean your window sash and frame.
  3. Wipe the glass panes using a paper towel (or lint free wipe) and a glass cleaning solution, either store bought or homemade.
  4. Remove your window screens and wash them using a simple combination of soap and water. Be sure to allow your screens to air-dry after cleaning.

How do you replace a window screen?

Window screens are a major functional and aesthetic feature of your windows. If your window screen has major damages, holes or tears, you’ll want to replace them as soon as possible. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Remove the window screen from your window.
  2. Laying your screen flat, remove the current window screen mesh from the grooves that hold it in place.
  3. Roll out and stretch the replacement screen mesh over your window screen frame, leaving some extra room along the edges, and cut using your tool of choice.
  4. Use a spline roller to push your new screen mesh into the grooves of your screen’s frame.
  5. Once the new mesh is secure, trim the extra material along the edges.
  6. Reinstall your finished window screen.

How do you install replacement windows?

What is a window sash?

A window sash is the part of the window that holds the glass panes and its components together. The window sash is, itself, fitted into the window frame and can be either stationary or movable depending on the window style. With double hung windows, for example, the window sash moves up and down to allow for fresh air to flow in and out of the home.
